May 15, 2007 - SAN ANGELO, Texas – The fireworks that were scheduled to follow the Colts’ home opener Tuesday night started a bit early. A perfect relay throw to the plate ended the game as pinch-runner Patrick Gaylord was tagged out at home to preserve the Colts’ victory, 3-2.
Colts closer Stephen Artz entered the game in the ninth looking to nail down his first save of the year. Artz allowed a one-out single, but retired the next batter, Barrett Rice, when he was robbed by a sliding catch by the right fielder Trey Roberson. Then with two out and Gaylord at first base, Espinosa hit a double off the left-center field wall. Manager Vince Moore waved around Gaylord, but Ronnie Gaines threw it to the shortstop Kealy, who made a one-hop relay throw to the plate, in time for the catcher Mike Landry to apply the tag ahead of Gaylord sliding home.
The Colts jumped out to an early lead against Coyotes starter Dario Ferrand, who took the loss despite going seven innings and striking out five. Gaines led off the first with a walk, stole second, went to third on an infield single by Kealy, and scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch by Ferrand (0-1).
Then, after Kealy advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a groundout by John Anderson, he came home on an RBI single to left by Jason Crosland.
Colts starter Matt Duff was once again nearly flawless. He threw five shutout innings for the win-increasing his total to nine scoreless frames in two starts-and didn’t allow a hit until the fifth. Duff (1-0) also fanned seven and walked just one.
Ryan Mulle came in the game to relieve Duff and after a 1-2-3 sixth, gave up a two-run double to Barrett Rice to make it a 3-2 game. However, Rice was tagged out between second and third on the play when he tried to stretch his double into a triple. The next batter, Luis Espinosa, was thrown out at second base by Gaines when he attempted to gain an extra bag.
Game two of this four-game series is at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday night and the first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive Colts magnet schedules, sponsored by Double Dave’s Pizzaworks.
