Colts pick up first win of year, 5-1

May 9, 2007 - EDINBURG, Texas – It didn’t take long after the Colts’ first loss for them to get their first win of the 2007 season.

Following Tuesday night’s 3-2 loss to Edinburg, the Colts defeated the Coyotes 5-1 on Wednesday in a game that started at 10:35 a.m. to accommodate school kids attending the game.

Just as in their first game, the Colts took a 1-0 lead when Andres Rodriguez hit his first home run of the season, a solo blast to left field off Coyotes starter Dario Ferrand in the fourth.

In the next inning, Jason Crosland hit a two-out, two-run double down the left-field line against Ferrand (0-1) to give the Colts a 3-0 lead. Crosland (pictured above) finished 2-for-4 and has three RBIs in the first two games of the series.

That was all the San Angelo pitchers needed, as starter Matt Duff set the pace with four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five. Since Duff did not pitch enough innings to qualify for the win, reliever Josh Chitwood was credited with the victory. The right-hander hurled three scoreless innings, though he got into jams in the sixth and seventh innings. In each frame, Chitwood (1-0) allowed the first two batters to reach base but then retired the next three in a row.

Chace Vacek made his second appearance of the season, and was touched up for a run in the eighth after Aaron Sisk singled home Nelson Teilon, who had doubled, to make it a 3-1 game.

However, San Angelo added two insurance runs in the ninth on an RBI single by catcher Mike Landry and an RBI groundout by Ronnie Gaines.

Vacek then pitched a scoreless ninth inning and recorded his first save of the season. Even though the margin of victory was four runs, Vacek was credited with the save because he entered the game in the eighth when the Colts were leading 3-0 and he preserved the win.

The broadcast of this game was recorded live with Frank Mentesana calling the action and it will be played tonight on “Cool 100” – KCLL 100.1 FM beginning with the pre-game show at 6:50 p.m.

The Colts return to Foster Field for their home opener at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, which features post-game fireworks, sponsored by Adobe T-shirts and KLST. Advertising, ticket, and group information are available by calling the box office at (325) 942-6587.

The San Angelo Colts are a part of a six-team league that make up United League Baseball. The independent league has teams located in San Angelo, Laredo, Amarillo, Edinburg, and Rio Grande Valley, Texas as well as Alexandria, Louisiana, and began play in the 2006 season.
